merino base (smartwool, koombi, whatever) then fleece over that.   just bought a columbia wind proof jacket at a local sporting goods chain that was on clearance and tried it on under my asbell wool and it worked like a charm quiet and warm on and cold windy saturday here in MA

I agree with threeunder. Silk under wool is very effective but not bulky. It does not get especially cold here in Georgia, but with my diabetes, moderate cold is a severe problem. These undergarments are a great choice.

Merino wool or the heavy weight fleece is great for on stand. A couple years back my sister got me that polartec powerstetch and its probably the best I have used if your on the go.

Minus 33 merino wool for me.  UA and others like it can't compare IMO.

This year I have used a lot more wool and have been a lot warmer.
I like to start out with the silk if it is truly cold.

Then add a Merino long underwear.
Lots of good brands already mentioned.

I first got bought some thinner Smart Wool and it's good. I have used the Minus 33 in a thicker base layer and its very good. I must say the First Lite with the thumb holes is great.

I have one of the Web Foot body stockings (union suit fleece) but it is made by a different company...can't recall the name.

Using that over the Merino base, it is too much if you are moving, but great in the stand sitting still.

I do not like the tight clammy feeling of Under Armor. Their Cold Gear just isn't warm for me.

I got the LL Bean Cresta Wool top last year and used it all season and it's fantastic. Going to get the pants soon. Super comfortable and warm and has the thumb hole cuffs as well. I think it's on sale now too.

X2 - absolutely the best clothing product I have purchased in many years.  This stuff is fantastic. [/b]
X3!

I just switch to First Lite this year and love it! In fact I ordered more today.

X2 on what Fletcher said on thrift stores.  Picked up a 100% lambs wool pull over sweater at the salvation army family store this past weekend. It will make an awesome mid layer.  And it was $3 bucks!

First Lite is best in my opinion.

I found some Justin Charles merino wool on sale a couple years ago.  No synthetic I've tried has come close.  Merino is amazing!

I'm a big fan of the minus 33.   I haven't tried others, but haven't needed to.
