Question for the longbow hunters

For the fellas who hunt with longbow, especially the ones that are in the 62" and longer class. Is it a challenge to keep the limbs clear when taking a shot? Can these bows be shot while kneeling? Or must you position yourself to always shoot standing up?

No, I just cant the bow. All my bows are 68 and 70" and I've never had a problem.

I shoot 64" to 68" bows and have no problems, make sure to practice like you hunt but you should be doing this with any bow you hunt with.

I have 6 longbows at 68" length and have no trouble shooting them from elevated stands. You do have to get used to the length and allow for lower limb clearance, but it is just a matter of practicing a bit. Not only can they be shot kneeling, but, in my younger days, before back trouble, I won a bet by accurately shooting my bow from the prone position.

I shoot 64" bows and have little problems. Commercial popup blinds can be a problem, so you have to practice out of them to make sure you have good clearance. I always shoot from a chair when I hunt, either in a ground blind or from a treestand, but when I have to kneel at a 3D shoot to make a shot I do not have any problems.

We have few trees, but lots a sage. When I hunt in MO, From a tree, not a problem

I shoot a 64" bow...and from a treestand I have no problems. Just make sure everything is clear...and like others have said practice shooting. U will get used to it.

Very good info, thanks for sharing with me. Shopping around for my first trad bow, I was leaning towards a longbow but I was worried the length might make things to cumbersome

I'm kinda short and shoot a 62" LB without any issues. I guess I'm used to it.

No problems here. I shoot a 64 inch and two 68 inch bows. Just make yourself aware of your surroundings before the shot presents itself.

After a while, you get used to shooting it in the stuff and just do what it takes. You need to practice it "in the stuff" to get there.

Also. See Mr Jeffer above. Note that he doesn't just cant the bow but not his body. You need to bend with the bow at certain times (as above. . as in a treestand, some others) to keep your aim and release correct.

In a treestand when shooting hard to your left (if you are right handed) you will want to note where your bottom limb is. Other than that I don't have any problems shooting 66 inch bows from the ground or from trees.

I hunt with a 74" bow and haven't had much trouble. Not totally trouble free, but it's a trade off. Most of the time, I'll take the slight issues related to a longer bow over the issues related to a shorter bow. (I made two 54" Osage and a 55" hickory too, and don't much like hunting with them vs the longer bows.)
