What Deer call do you use ?

ChuckC

I use a voice call myself.   I kinda gather up my throat and yell " k'mere deer !"        :dunno:

OK, not.  I have a bunch of calls but have morphed away from using nearly all of them.  I prefer to sit areas that I have scouted to show deer movement past me, not off in the distance.  I tend to hunt thicker areas (marsh).  I do voice call grunts when the end of October and early November comes.

Just got a lone star deer grunt this year out of the classified.

Check them out in the sponsor classified. Outstanding sounding call!

"The Can" by Primos and a Hunter's Specialty grunt tube has worked great for me for lots of years.

I use Primos Buck Roar, Primos "The Can" and my personal favorite, is a grunt call that I made myself that seems to work better than others.

Soft doe bleats work best for me, any call that makes them. I have a particular favorite I bought many years ago called a "west Virginia Deer Call" not sure they are made anymore.

If I lived in West Virginia I'd have to get me one of those.... Lol, sorry, couldn't help myself.
In all seriousness, I use my voice to grunt and it seems to be pretty effective

I have has success with doe and fawn bleats in the early season.  I have found that a lot of times younger deer in the area will come check them out just out of curiosity.  You may not harvest them, but it sure is fun and a lot of good learning/observation.

In the rut....I rattle, grunt, and snort wheeze.  I have had luck with all these calls.  I have become a huge believer in the snort wheeze for bringing in dominant bucks.  Mike Mitten has a fantastic article on the Brothers of the Bow website explaining calls for all different times throughout the season.

Some words of caution...I look at deer calling as a risk and reward type situation.  Anytime you make noise, you potentially alert deer of your location.  It has been my observation that rutting whitetail bucks that respond to calls are very alert, as they are looking for the buck that they think made the calls.  I have had bucks spin on a dime and come looking after grunting.  I have also had them blow out of there like their butt was on fire if they've been bested in a couple fights.  The snort wheeze is interesting.  I have never seen a buck of any size spook at it.  They either show no interest at all, or come running.

I think deer calling can be a VERY effective tool for the toolbox.  That being said it is no substitute for thorough scouting and proper stand location.  There are a lot if opinions on the topic, these are mine.  I will continue to follow this thread.

Good luck this season!!!

HS true talker had same one for 11 years

True talker is the best one I've used.

I was riding my bike back to camp on public land in fl. bout 10yrs ago. Saw a big deer walk fast across the road into some planted pines about 80 yds down the road.

Laid my bike down in the grass road, walked down to about where I thought he crossed and grunted a few times with the True Talker.

He came trotting out of the pines back onto the grassy rd. about 50 yds farther down from me and looked straight up towards me squatting down in middle of road. Then came trotting straight towards me with weird eyed look and tongue hanging out the side of his mouth. Probably been on the go for who knows how long.

Anyway he was trotting down the road just like one of those black bulls with a bull fighter..same type trot and when he got about 25yds from me he made me out a veered off into the pines.

I think he thought my bike (which was another 50yds back laying in the road with the handle bars sticking up) was a buck. I had the swept around handle bars with bow or gun holders sticking up looking kinda like points on antlers.

He was a fine fl. buck with widest spread I've ever seen.

Grunted up a lot of deer with the old model HS True Talker.

I have had great luck with my Primos hardwood grunter

Bears can attack people- although fewer people have been killed by bears than in all WWI and WWII combined.
