With life being crazy busy this year i have not had much time to spend with all of you on this awesome site but i stop in from time to time. Since i have some rare time to my self today i thought i would tell the story of a special buck i called Lucky.

This story takes place about 15 years ago. I had permission to hunt the land across the road from my parents house. The deer that called that land home would feed in my parents yard in the evenings. One day in the early summer a buck showed up that we never saw before.

He was not a big buck by any means but he was a piebald buck. The bottom half of his body was white and the top half had mixed patches of white and brown. His rack was just a six point with about a 14 inch spread but he was a beautiful deer. We would see him often in the yard feeding in the evenings and i decided i would hunt for him come  bow season that year.

I began to shoot every day. I was shooting my old 40 lb 1975 bear super kodiak recurve with 2016 aluminum arrows. By the end of September i was hitting every thing i shot at out to 20 yards, i was ready.

I had my tree stand hung in a white oak across the road from my parents house. That white oak tree was in a spot that no matter what direction the deer came from they always seemed to walk past that tree.It took me 8 years to figure that out but once i did i had venison in the freezer every year.Opening day of bow season was just a few days away.

Opening morning i was in my stand 30 minutes before light. As the first hour of the season was almost over without a deer sighting i looked up the hill to see Lucky walking across the hill above me at about 30 yards. He was to far for a shot and the brush was to thick anyway.

I only had seconds to figure out what to do. I remembered i had a grunt call in my pocket so i pulled it out and grunted once.Lucky stopped and looked around. I grunted once more and he turned and started walking right toward my stand,i was going to get a shot!

When Lucky got to about 10 yards he began to swing to the left of my tree and stopped broad side at 5 yards. I remember it like it was yesterday, the super kodiak came up and the draw was smooth. I hit my anchor and focused on the spot above his elbow,This is where it all went wrong. My arrows have never hit high for me out of a tree stand and i know this but for some reason i focused low on Lucky's chest. The string slipped from my fingers and i watched my arrow fly through the air.

My arrow hit right where i was focused and sliced through Lucky and stuck in the ground. Because of the sharp downward angle the arrow missed the lungs and heart and only cut flesh. Lucky jumped at the shot and trotted 30 yards and stopped. He then just walked off down through the woods as i watched in disbelief of what just happened.

I waited 15 minutes and got down to check my arrow. There was some dark red blood on the arrow but not a lot.I took a walk over to where Lucky stopped after the shot and there was very little blood. I decided to go back to my parents house and give Lucky 4 hours before i would start tracking him.

The blood trail was slim but i slowly worked it out and as i got down to the creek something made me look to the left and there was Lucky laying not 20 yards away.....looking right at me! Our eyes met and he jumped from his bed and ran across the creek and up through the woods. I knew then that i had messed up my only chance at this once in a lifetime deer. I went back to the house to give Lucky a few more hours and then went back in to try to track him again. I found nothing more and he was gone. I put the word out to every body i knew in the area to keep their eyes open for Lucky with the hope he was alive.

About a week later i got word from a friend that one of the guys at the fire house had see Lucky chasing a doe behind the fire house and he looked fine. That sighting of Lucky was the last time he was ever seen.Watching my arrow hit Lucky too low still haunts me to this day but i guess the universe had other plans for us. That is the story of a buck i called Lucky. I hope you all enjoyed it.

Thanks for sharing!

I've had a few different critters I could have named "Lucky" over the years!

Good luck to you this season!
