I agree completely with Jim, in that confidence is the key to making a shot at game.  If you don't absolutely know that you're gonna make the shot, you've already blown it!  I also think that game can be WAY too close.  My longest shot has been 28yds. and my closest has been 5yds. on the ground. Wanna guess which one I thought was the tougher shot?

Big Jim got it right.

My "sweet spot" is about 13 yds.
I hunt from the ground, so I'm talking true yardage..not the angling yardage from being in a tree.

Seems to be far enough away from deer to move a little ( draw) , but not so far I'm too worried about the shot.

I'm not usually very comfortable past 18yds.
..on a nice warm day..maybe.

But again that's me.

Your confidence level/distance ( and mine) can't really be written in stone and described in yards.

It's how that particular shot feels on that particular day at that particular time on that particular animal.

All the game I've taken with bows over the years ( mostly wheel bows) have been in the 10-18 yd range...with one about 12 foot....and my 1st at 38yds..( not proud of that shot. It was a bad decision and I was very lucky to have harvested that deer and not just wound it..LESSON LEARNED THAT DAY)

BUT...my hunting spots generally don't allow for longer shots.
I kinda set them up that way...so I'm not even tempted to take an "iffy" shot in a moment of weakness.

This is my first year with trad, but even with my compound most of my shots have been 20 yards or under. I've only shot two deer at 30 yards and missed one at 30 yards. With trad. stuff i'm 99% at 15 but at 20 i'm right now about 30%. Don't know why 5 more steps back makes that big of difference but it does a least for me. Pip

Pip...It's a mental/visual thing.

Just make sure your form is good and setup is tuned.

Longer yardage magnifies problems in both.

After you get those things worked out, longer shots will come much easier and you'll feel much less frustration.

For my "big game" (deer/boar ) from tree stand,my shooting distance are usually from 10 to 15 yards, for small game from the ground, 3 to 40 yards.

12 yds the closest and 25ish for my longest kill shot. I would, however, not take a 25 plus yarder today. It seems that like many things in life, time has a way of moderating things. In my youth I have flung a few at 40 yds or so.

Well, these posts on average yardage being generally under 45' ought to quell any posts about speed or if 40# is enough for deer. Good stuff here guys. Getting close like that without bring seen is an accomplishment in itself even if you miss.

Yes getting close is key, that's why any animal you shoot especially with trad is a trophy. Small buck, big buck especially does (Miss if you breath I'm going to see you) they are all trophies. No need to apologize when you put a pic of small buck or doe on sight. Not all people have the time or resources necessary to kill a monster deer,If they not on your property you can't kill them.

My last kills were at 17, 8, and 12 yards.

20 yds and in is my comfort zone but I practice alot at 25 to 30 but normally won't take this shots just something I do

Mostly still hunt whitetail with most taken from 15-30 yards, farthest,43 yards. Anything over 20 yards has to feel perfect. Lots of practice on small game.
