String comes half way off the nock. Any ideas?

I'm considering buying a used bow, however, I'm told that the string comes out of the nock grooves on one side. This occurs only when the bow is shot. Is this just a string issue or something more significant?

it could be a twisted limb I'd avoid it,,,, my experience with used bows is every time I had a bow with string vs string nock problem it was a consistant problem and seemed to get worse even unstringing when shot....

others here might want to attempt to fix it or really get into what the problem is but with a limb twist issue I pass on that.

longbow, check the sting nock grooves.  There is a chance one may be higher or lower than the other and may be corrected.

I would look at either a twisted limb or a poorly made / designed nock, maybe coupled with a string loop that is too large for it.  If it is the nock design, there are things you can do to compensate, but it makes for a little more difficulty in stringing / unstringing your bow.

What type of bow is it?  It might be an easy fix and a great deal.

It's a longbow, so I doubt it's a twisted limb issue.

Take a good look at the nock grooves when its strung. We had 4-5 Bear Montana longbows come in to the shop directly from Bear that had the same problem...in fact on two of them the string would pop off within seconds of the bows being strung. The nock grooves were poorly cut. They were rounded from belly to back and not deep enough on one side, We sent a couple back and I fixed a couple others with a chainsaw file. It took a little work but the problem was fixed and the bows shot fine after that...good luck

Had one similar to that years ago.  String would come off after a few shots, if that many.

Finally figured out the string grooves were cut wrong.  Got it fixed,  problem solved.

Even if the string grooves are cut straight if they aren't deep enough the string will jump off.  Get a picture of the offending tip (with the string on) and post it here.

Had this issue.  A little TLC and my bow holds a string and shoots great.
