I noticed, in another thread, where BigJim lists some weights for a couple different woods he has used to build risers with. Is there a list specifying the weights for various riser woods? Including phenolic? I think it would be interesting to see.

If you do a search for exotic woods on Google a multitude of websites should come up that list exotic wood specs, including weight per cubic foot.

Blood wood, Bubinga,Bocote, & ebony is heavy stuff as is Cocobolo. Ironwood is seriously dense stuff too, also known as Ipe or Brazilian walnut.

I've never found anything heavier than G-10 Garolite which is an epoxy / fiberglass type phenolic.

Thanks guys. Any idea what regular ol phenolic weighs?

BigJim

The heaviest woods...lignum bitae, vera, snakewood are among the top...in that order where gabon ebony is in the 60's lb per cubic foot. Fiberglass is considerably heavier than wood at nearly twice the weight per cubic foot. And regular linen phenolic is about 80 lbs per cubic foot.

I just try to live my life in a way that would have made my father proud.

Thanks Jim. Wow, I had no idea fiberglass is so heavy. So it's heavier than phenolic?

Marble wood, Zebra wood are also heavy.

Www.wooddatabase.com  is a great site. When you click on the specs of a particular wood it gives the weight.

Dymondwood is dyed and pregnated with resin and is very heavy and stable.

I had a special Habu Vyperkahn 'Jet' edition that had a solid black glass riser...16" and it weighed a whopping 2.2#!!  That bow was like a bench rest rifle.
