I seem to remember a thread including a fellow TG'er who tapered points and nocks with a standard drill, fitted with sanding disc, and a taper guide. Anyone tried this?
I know, a Woodchuck or disc sander is preferable - but my checkbook is on an improvisational budget.

I have one. You need a chunk of wood about 8" wide and 4' long.  Draw a 5 degree and an 11 degree line from a single point on a straight line.  You can get fancy and cut a v notch or just set finish nails to the edge of the lines.  I used a flat sided drill and hose clamps to hold the drill firmly to the straight line.  To make sure my grinds were on center I drew a line around the shaft and split that line while making the taper.

Thanks Pavan, that's helpful. My drill isn't flat sided, so I'm thinking maybe U bolts, and shim the drill if I needed, to keep it square.
Might try the inexpensive wooden taper jig with it, figure it might put the placement of the shaft in goo spot on the sanding disc.

True-center tapering tool attached to a drill works very well
