At I east it won't have to hear them complain about chiggers.

looking forward to seeing how the hunt unfolds and how these deer react to those temps. Should be more day time activity with that front approaching. Enjoy the warm...we got -32 without the wind here in MN, the Gov closed all the schools in the state for mon. stay warm, hunt hard!

Hey all! Checking in from Kenny M's.... Mike and I got in late last night driving thru a white out....Did not hunt this morning...Took a quick drive thru the farms and counted a dozen or so deer. Made a trip to Wally World to grab some groceries. Back to the cabin for lunch and plan for our afternoon hunt. Plan number 1 was to layer up real good. 7 degree temps with 20 mph winds. We decided to pick 2 locations on the south farm to observe and find out where the deer are feeding. Long story short....I was covered in deer tonight. Saw roughly 25...3 bucks and the rest does. 1 buck was a real nice one... I'm guessing 140 class. The other 2 were little guys.  I had 1 small buck behind me at 12 yds... I decided to pass on him and hope the big guy would make his way closer. These Missouri deer are big bodied.  I was amazed at the size of the does.  I was able to watch deer feeding for most of my hunt.. The best shot I had was at the little buck and I'm glad I passed. I was able to back track out of there at dark while the deer were still feeding. No harm done and should get another crack at them tomorrow.  Mike came up empty at the gap stand, but did see a flock of 50 plus turkeys.  Always great to see Kenny.  He showed up shortly after our return to camp. Kenny gave us pointers for tomorrows wind conditions and as usual was a pleasure to chat with. Going to be even colder tomorrow....but good company and ample deer sightings warms the soul    :)

On the bright side Kenny, it will be a 40-50 degree temperature swing to the good...   :readit:

Hopefully the Chiggers don't hatch again....

kennym

As long as they don't get into the snow chiggers, they'll be OK...

Stay sharp, Kenny.

Too cold this morning to get out of bed ! Mike and I did another drive  around the farms. Located plenty of additional fresh tracks entering the south farm from the east. The south farm has lots more cover than the North farm. The north farm has harvested bean fields and the south farm has harvested Milo fields. Both farms provide fantastic hunting opportunities, but the south farm seems to be REAL hot with sign during this cold snap.  The Milo is being hit hard by the turkeys and deer.  We headed out this afternoon to hunt for a couple hours before dark. The temp was -4 degrees and I knew I would need to hunker in low with the deer to survive the breeze. Milo Mike and I are both ground pounding and haven't messed with any tree stands yet.  I was on stand for 30 minutes before spotting the familiar movement browsing in the cedars just below me. 4 fat does were digging and eating as they worked their way to the Milo.  The does would occasionally gaze up past me and I had a feeling there was more animals behind me. A slow turn of the head confirmed 3 brown bodies about 20 yds behind me.  Wind was in my face and I knew it wouldn't be long before the gals would get a whiff of last nights chili. They got a whiff and apparently didn't like it much. But the draw of the milo field was too much for them so they backed up and entered the field further up from me.  It wasn't long I could count 15 deer in the field. I had a yearling at 5 yds that saw me and jumped out of her skin to join the others in the field. Mike hunted on higher ground than I did and also saw plenty of deer. I'm sure he'll stop by later to fill you all in.  It was -8 when we made it to the truck at dark. Cold enough to freeze a fart.

Wow I bet when you and Mike planned this late hunt you weren't expecting a Michigan winter to be waiting for you.  Good luck and remember to stay away from the Chinise Buffets.
