Bamboo arrows anyone?

Does anyone have any experience with bamboo arrows? I was thinking about trying some, but I don't know much about them.

Love 'em!  River Cane or Bamboo.  Naturally tapered.  They're about all I shoot anymore.  Kinda a pain to build from scratch, but well worth the time spent!

Double what JAG said, if you want to build a primitive arrow, nothing beats bamboo. Top it off with real turkey feathers, self nocks and stone points and you have a great arrow !!! I'll post some pics tonight.

Someone else asked about this a while back. I posted some stuff on them you might want to look up. But they are very forgiving as to there spine. I can shoot the same arrows off my bow from 44lbs. to 57lbs. I know that sounds crazy but you should try it. I can give you some more info on building them if you want to send me a PM. Thanks, Gary

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. I'll get ahold of you when I start.  Any idea where a good place to buy shafts?  I see a bunch of positive feedback from some of the stuff coming out of Hong Kong and Shanghai on ****, but I don't know... prefer to keep the money in the US.

How heavy are they? I always figured they would be rather light, but really strong, and thus hard to get them made to 10 gpp.

ALSO, can anyone recommend a good jig for both traditional arrows 11/32" and kids metal/carbon shafts... maybe something other than Bitzenburger (it's expensive).

Tradguy, you can make a hunting arrow no problem with boo shafts. you will be surprised at the weight.

Not a lot of good bamboo growing in the US, so even what you buy from US dealers/suppliers is coming from the East.  I've been shooting bamboo arrows for quite some time and really like them.  With the pre-finished arrows, I find a great deal of quality variability, but with the shafts, they are much better.  I usually make mine Japanese-style, with silk thread wrapped around the fronts of the feathers, behind points, and ahead of nocks, and horn or bone nocks.

I like saving money myself but when i got back into trad I guess it's been around 8 or so years now. The first thing I did was buy a Bitz and I'm glad I did because it has paid for itself many times over. This is one time you will get what you pay for.

UrbanArcher1975, since you live in Florida, you should be able to find lots of cane growing nearby.  Harvest some this winter and have fun.  Nature's carbon shafts.
