Welcome from NY.

I would suggest meeting some people in your area and holding their bows. shoot them if you can.  You will get an idea of what feels right.  after you've been shooting for a while you can "fine Tune" your equipment.  You might find a bowyer close who will invite you to his shop.

It was said many times, start lighter than you think.  I shot a 70 lb compound and at first 40 was a lot for me.  it was only weeks before I started with 45lbs which I still shoot often today.

I also think some of the vintage bows like bear, browning, shakesphere, Damon Howatt, Ben Pearson and others are great shooting bows and can still be found for great prices.  I still prefer some of the older bows over my customs.

Ask a  lot of questions.  Plus this site has a search function, dont try to reinvent the wheel.  You will get frustrated and break/lose a lot of arrows.

Most importantly Keep it fun. dont try to over think everything.
Relax,

You'll live longer!
