I've used a belt and H harness setup with a butt pack and canteen for years.I take a back pack now,I find it handier. They do work great and are low cost.Durability is great with them.

You might want to check out the BadLands Monster pack. I use one and love it.

Get yourself a Stick and Limbs Turkey Vest and buy a yard of fabric and alter the back to carry a water reservoir. Plenty of pockets and unbeatable price and made in USA.

In the Marines we called it 782 gear or duece gear.  I used it from time to time once I got out and migrated away from it.  I found that with a arrowmaster or Catquiver I could carry my arrow's and all the gear I needed better than on the load bearing gear.  I bought a 32oz. widemouth stailess canteen, cup and stove, that attaches to the catquiver and is perfect for me.

Take a look at any "dump pouch" avaliable for the military.  Many of them will ride like a thigh holster and will stay out of your way.
