New ILF Riser from Black Creek Bows
« on: April 05, 2013, 08:07:00 PM »
Just got a new ILF riser from Jim Gainey at Black Creek Bows.
I’m very happy with it.

It’s 17”, Cocobolo and Bocote. A really pretty handle, I think. Nice mass/weight without feeling at all blocky.
Dead-in-the-hand too, which I like. The grip fits me perfectly.
ILF fittings and the rest of the craftsmanship are first rate.

Never had a custom build before (except for my selfbows). Jim’s a great guy to do business with.

Still setting it up but wanted to show off a few pics. Let me know what you think.

I have shot the riser a few times, more tomorrow, and it works very well for me. The grip seems to force consistency and resists any torque.

Very dead in the hand and solid feel on the shot. I have an old shoulder injury and this is really important to me if I'm going to shoot very many arrows in a session.

The limbs are BF Extremes, 45# longs. 62" and really smooth on this riser. I don't know that Jim makes ILF limbs (yet).

Thanks for all your comments.

Ack, Hamish' you just reminded me that BC makes ILF risers!  Love the longbows, I've got one and I got my brother one not too long ago.  The BFs need a wood riser too  ;)

Heard good things about that grip - does he make a 19" or 21" riser? Is it cut quite a bit past centre too? Thx - M

Marks prey for not responding sooner im at a shoot in ky. , I haven't built any over17".   I could build a19" but I think that is as long as I would want to go. I cut them 1/8" past center. Hope this helps. If I can be of any other help let me know.    Jim

Shot the riser again today. Has a nice, natural fit, which is saying a lot since I recently switched to left and nothing much feels natural yet.

Love the dead 'thunk' on the shot.

Jim does nothing but great work, and a top notch feller! He and I have been friends for several years now. We sat up across from each other as vendors at KY Tradfest this weekend, did a little swapping back and forth, contemplating getting him to build me a long bow, thinking curly maple and myrtle all the way around.
