Re-staining actionwood?

I know actionwood is already pre-stained so I know I can't completely change the color but can I change the tint? Can I use a furniture stripper on it to help lighter the original color without delaminating it? This is for a riser that's an ugly greenish gray color.

Mat,
Paint it rather then try to change the stain.

Take the shine off it and try some GEL stain. I have seen MDF stained with gel stain and you would think it was real cherry wood.
