So early I posted a story about the cops over exaggerating me and a few friends stump shooting because we were in city limits.
I have done some research and looked into all the local DNR grounds. Unless hunting, we can only shoot at the range.
That isn't a problem for me but the other guys don't have their hunting license. And the state of indiana requires that they go through hunters ed since we were all born 1987 or later.
So where the heck can we stump shoot in indiana?

I hope you don't take this wrong but my opinion of your earlier post was that you where doing something illegal and got lucky. Ignorance is never a good excuse.

That said I would probably recommend the hunter ed course and being properly licenced for whatever game your pursuing. Also keep in mind that on public land there are still hunters out there trying hard to take late season game and orange is required.

This stuff ain't no rocket surgery science!

Perfectly understandable and I agree we did get lucky and it was illegal. It was over exaggerated by the local pd. Regardless, as I stated, I have my license. the other guys have no interest in hunting right now. But they love trad shooting.
Basically the queston would be......is there any where to stump shoot in indiana that is outside of city limits but not a DNR property?

Maybe knock on some doors, ask if you could have access. Maybe you will get lucky and someone will let you on their property. Who knows, maybe down the road a spell it will lead to a friendship and possibly some new hunting grounds for you. I always go by the saying "If you don't ask a question, then you will certainly never recieve a answer". Case in point. The main property I have been fortunate to hunt all to myself since 85' all started with a knock on the door and a handshake. Landowner lives in Nevada now, I keep watch on the place in return for year round fishing/ hunting rights.

So  WHERE  in Happy Hoosierland are you located?? There are  ACRES  and  ACRES  of Woods that are attatched to Farmland where I live. Get out and get to know the Local Farmers.  :readit:    what you are Up To, and Most will be Accomodating.  :wavey:

Hey Kyle,

Have you checked into Hoosier NF?  If one of you is over 18, you should be able to get an Apprentice License for up to 3 years without doing hunter's ed.  You can also do hunter's ed online.  3D shoots are fun practice.  Finally, I would highly second Shakes advice to get some private ground to shoot on.  It doesn't take much to have a great stumpshoot.  A creekbottom and some trashbags.  Walk the creek, shoot trash, put it in the bag and clean up the landowner's property while you are at it.  Let the property owner borrow a bow and you'll probably end up making a friend.

Hard to tell you where if we don't know where you are. As John said, we stump shoot in the HNF and other State properties but if hunting season is in, you' better have a license and be wearing the required safety equipment if need be.

I think he might be near or in Indianapolis.

I'm with the "cover yourself, orange, license" crowd..
That said ..I'm with John; knock on a few doors, "Yessir and No Ma'am" with manners; and carry out more than you take in...You'd be surprised who will let you and how much you carry out!!

AND; Like Tim says; let us know where ya are - we might get you out with one or more of us and go from there.

Good Luck !!

In Michigan you can stump shoot on state land with a licence. Im going to really check our reulations for being on state land with a bow in spring or summer as long as I have a small game licence. Woodchucks and other varments can be hunted year round. If you want to stump shoot with your friends they will have to just break down and take the hunters ed and get a licence. You never know, maybe they will start hunting.

I was gonna say I could use someone to stump shoot with. I live on a farm and got plenty of land. Problem is that it is 3 hours from portage. If ever in east central indiana let me know.

It would be a haul for you but there is a trad club in scotsburg that has 3d shoots twice a month. Also you might look into joining a conservation club. Another work around is getting your apprentice hunting license snd then going ground hog hunting. There is no fixed season or limits on groung hogs.

You have a archery club right where you are called deep river bowmen. I believe it is very reasonable to join and they have 3D shoots throughout the year. They have a web site.

JBridegroom22

Did you ever find any place that is close by?

RobinHood1389

josh deep river bowman is pretty much my only option. Found a large wood plot in south haven that might pan out.....i'll keep you informed
