R/D's soon to come

James Berry (JD Berry) makes the best D shaped longbows I have shot...... and the price is absurd (1/2 price of other similar bows with less quality and design).  He's been at it a while.
Everything has a price - the more we accept, the more the cost

Caribow Tuktu ET 53# @ 27 Inches
Thunderhorn takedown longbow 55# @ 27
Lots of James Berry Bows

The best traditional D shaped longbows I have shot are made by JET Archery.
Casse Couilles!

Gil Verwey

I have had many from just about every bowyer out there. I find Northern Mist to be my preference. I have had several Sheltons and a Whisper. I also shot Classics. Not only are they great shooters but they are relatively inexpensive.

If I were to buy a new D shaped longbow it would be a Shelton.

many great choices, and as we all know.... THERE IS NO 1 "BEST"..... its speculative at best, personal preference.

One that should be mentioned though, and ive not seen is the FOX ARCHERY TRADITIONAL....  amazing bows.

Perhaps the finding the "Best" American style longbow is a fools errand given the individual preference/mechanics involved in the best for any individual archers.

However, having said that there are definitely several bowyers that have their 10,000 hours in...
James Berry has been at it for 32 years and is really at the top of his came right now.  I have seen him build in the shop and he is an artesian from another age in terms of the intensity and attention he puts into his builds and the standards he holds for his bows.  His bows show and preform to these high standards.

I know I am bias, but I vote the Vixen, the Morning Star and/or the Northstar ( I have not shot the Misty Dawn).

I have shot other makes and models (Hill, Robertson, Toelke, etc) and I know there are other beauties out there for sure, but JD Berry's American style longbows are unquestionably world class.  When I pick one of my bows up I can feel the history, the power and the craftsmanship in each bow and in every shot.

Dan Toelke has built a reputation primarily with his d/r Whip longbow but his Super Ds are exceptional. They are faster than most and like all Dan's bows are extremely well mannered and quieter than quiet. I like them so much I have ended up shooting them about 90% of the time.
I started shooting a Super D this summer and have discovered that Jim's words above ring true

Now Roy with that high classed stable of bows you have, you have the one? I am trying to get to just one. Shortly, there will be the main one for me. It is a good thing we don't treat our women like we do our bows. Then it would be, the one we like the most, but we sure do like messing around with the others. Or did I say that wrong. Its a good thing our bows are not like our women, or at least my wife. The main one would shoot you if you were messing around with the others.

I am really enjoying the Mohawk I have been shooting for a bit now....but also am partial to the Robertson Stykbow line of longbows.

That being said there are far more bows that are sweet shooters with great feel and looks that can be mentioned...as varied as the opinions we all hold.

Go to a large shoot....shoot as many as you can find on vendor racks or from people on the range...and the first one that tugs at your heart and makes you keep thinking of it long after the shot....BUY IT!!!!!

Pavan, For me it really isn't so much about how the bow shoots or feels, it's how the bow makes me feel... and shoot!
