Goin scouting for em tommorrow, found good sign in one area gonna check one more where I know they are.
Not say I am hard core but I like to chase em a bit. Still lookin for my first bow kill bear. Cant bait here so it is a sit, wait, and pray for the most part. Just gotta be in a good area-hopefully I have it this year.

Talk to some of the guys around here who use hounds! Now those boys are hard core!

Those hounders knock 4 or 5 down over 500 lbs here every year where I hunt, w/ a few over 600 in the past couple years. biggest I have seen and I have seen 2 of them that were 640 and 642.

Now if I can get one of them with my curve we be good!

Our population here in Washington is doing very well since the ban on hound hunting and baiting a few years ago.

Last September I saw 5 black bears in two weeks of bowhunting my favorite deer area, but could never get one within bow range. There was a bumper crop of Mountain Ash berries and they were feeding heavily upon them.  My partner and I attempted a couple stalks on big ones (250 or so), but the wind never cooperated.

I did sit over an area one morning and took a young one with my Pre 64 model 70 (Please control your flaming).  By the way, table fare was outstanding.

Hopefully, my luck will change this season and I can get within bow range and get my first bow- killed bear. Taking a bear without the benefit of hounds or baiting has to be one of the great challenges of a bowhunter.

Wwhen I lived in AK that's what I did every spring-sometimes in Fall by accident while hunting moose.  I want  aglacier bear the blue variety-like to take it with a longbow.

Two bears in a row so far but I plan on going on "Quebec Quest" with Tradgangers every year God willing until they vote me off the island or worse!   :biglaugh:

I guess I would count myself as well. I go off on a bear trip at least once a year, twice this year. I came to believe this last May that I love to bowhunt black bears even more than deer. Bears are my favorite animal.

Roadkill,

I thought the ice (blue) bear, and the Kermodie (white) phases of the black bear were protected species variants?

J-dog

I found em Saturday, back in a bottom in the Croatan game lands. They were rootin around for grubs tearin stumps and rotten trees apart. Now actually gettin a shot will depend on some luck, as we cannot bait em and this is big woods hunting, Catfish lake wilderness area.

Me and a friend are gonna place stands in there and hope one of us gets a shot, he shoots a pistol or rifle and me with my curve. Be cool for one of us to tag a nice boar. Bad thing is I wont pass on a deer if it comes too close!

Good luck to all, stay safe

J

Oh yeah me and my friend had trekked all those woods in the heat scoutin (he from Michigan, doesn't handle heat/humidity well) got back to the truck after a 5 hour trek sittin drinkin the last of the water supply and a 250-300 pounder crosses the road a couple hundred yards from the truck! @ 3 o clock-watched him in the binos.

It took me 13 hunts to finally get one with the bow.I had target panic bay or bear fever. Now I got three in a row. Love watching them they seam like they got own personalities.
