I found a great spot to hunt next fall.  What it looks like is an island in the middle of a clear cut.  The island is open and has oaks in it.  I am guessing it is 125 yards long by 70 yards wide.  The clear cut around it is about 15 feet tall and thick.  There are a ton of trails coming out of the cut and going across the island.  The issue I see is not being able to cover the entire area and the deer picking different trails as they cross it.  My though is to get a decoy.  I was looking at the Primos forkhorn.  We do not have a lot of big bucks and I enjoy seeing deer as well as maybe having my wife get a shot at a legal buck.  I was thinking about putting the decoy up in the middle of the island and sitting on the down wind side of it to get the shot as they came in to see it.  I would also leave the decoy hid under a brush pile in the woods so I do not have to carry it in and out.  I hunt on a private farm.  What are your thoughts of my grand idea that I had at work the other day?  I know does will freak out but if I grunted/rattled the deer coming in would have something to focus on.

Those oaks can help you decide as they do not drop acorns every year the same times.I would key in on the deer activity as more deer use certain areas more.

Swamper, I understand what you are getting at but this spot is like a hub where deer travel all the time.  I am not hunting it as a food source but as a way to get close to the bedding area where I can get a shot and see more than 10 yards.

I'd hunt the spot and forget the decoy.  Im no fan of decoys, but that's my opinion.   If its that good a spot, the deer will be there decoy or not.  tree stand placement, movement at the right time, and playing the wind will be most important.  Sounds like an exceptional spot....  Only 11 more months till you can find out.  No way to get in it now and see what goes on??  good luck.

Deer WILL eat the acorns as the "hot trees" drop their precious cargo.  Problem is you will need good, quiet access from for any wind direction
