Ok guys, someone has to know.
Iv been trying to find a reasonably priced source of closed cell foam to use for making target butts.

Where can you get the stuff. I see most of the targets they sell in Bass pro and cabela's and those places are just layered foam targets.

What industry uses this foam? and can we get our hands on it?

PM me if you need to

Thanks
Andy

Can't really help you other than to say that, a good target is a Yoga block as a target, I think it's made from the same stuff as a Reinhardt target.

  • Bear Tamerlane 66" 30# @ 28" (1966)- for my better half

When I lived in Denver I had a customer that made cardboard boxes for companies to ship there goods in, computers..TVs.., they cut the foam and glued it in the box so the product would fit. They would sell me a piece of foam when I needed it. The company was Tharco, they were on the east side of town, I-70 & Havana-Peoria area.

Marine supply? I've got a friend telling me to check out our local harbor for foam scraps... supposedly big enough to use as targets.

go to your local building supply store and ask if they carry foam sill plate sealer - Dow markets it under the brand name Sill Seal. It is closed cell polyethelyne 1/4 inch thick It comes in various widths up to 7 1/2" in 50 foot rolls. Its very easy to layer into a target. wrap it around a piece uf cardboard to about 8-10 inches thick and slip it into a burlap sack. I dont know if you can find it in Australia.

Just get plastic weaved feed bags and fill with old  plastic bags. Stitch the top shut with fishing line. Work great for target butts.

Andy, the stuff is called mini-cell foam.It is used to pad things in kayaks and other marine uses.Just do a search for mini-cell foam.No foam is cheap.

I use a piece 4.5"x24"x24" to shoot broadheads into.A 55# bow will sink about 2/3 rd's of the way through, using heavy arrows. Two 3" thick slabs should stop arrows from most bows-for sure, two slabs of 4.5" will.

Also the standard density is 2#.That's what I use.Use a denser version and you won't need as much thickness.

This is also the foam used in bow quiver hoods.Once a slab is "shot out",there is usually plenty of foam around the perimeter to replenish bow quivers. It carves and rasps real well.
