I got this woodchuck...smart SOB...comes out and eats in the backyard. He's smart...stays roughly 40 yds out facing my back deck. Any sign of activity and he's gone back in the high weeds.

So...I grab "Lefty", sit on the deck behind the grill...   ;) ...sure enough he ventures out. Looks around, starts to eat and gives me the opportunity to ease up for the shot. My arrow hits about a foot over his back....

I sat down and waited....about 15 minutes later he eases out again. This time maybe a few yards farther out. Waiting for the right moment, I eased up again, adjusted my aim....and hit maybe 10" low!!    :scared:    :(

Needless to say....he's gone for the night. Retrieved my arrows, re sharpened my broadheads and hopefully get another crack at him Friday.

He'll cook up nice on the grill if I arrow him...keeping fingers crossed....   :dunno:

The Groundhog Hunt

Way down yonder in the fork of the branch
Way down yonder in the fork of the branch
The old sow whistles and the little pigs dance
Groundhog, groundhog.

Well come on Larry, now get your dog
Well come on Larry, now get your dog
We're going up the holler to catch a groundhog
Groundhog, groundhog.

Well we dug down, but we didn't dig deep (x2)
There lay a whistle pig fast asleep
Groundhog, groundhog.

One on top n' two underneath (x2)
Hear them groundhogs grind'in their teeth
Groundhog, groundhog.

Well here comes George with a six foot pole (2x)
Twists that groundhog right out of that hole
Groundhog, groundhog.

Well come on Larry bring your gun (2x)
We got that groundhog on the run
Groundhog, groundhog

Come here Larry I'm all out'a breath (2x)
That groundhog's choke'n my dog t' death
Groundhog, groundhog.

Pull out the knife, get 'im on the side (2x)
God-a-mighty, that's a pretty big wide
groundhog, groundhog.

Well yonder comes Sailor with a snicker and a grin (2x)
Groundhog grease all over her chin
Groundhog, groundhog.

Eat the meat and save the skin (x2)
Stretch in tight on the banjo rim
Groundhog, groundhog.

Well who put the pig  in the sausage machine (2x)
Turn the crank and what do you see?
Ground hog, ground hog.

I know your pain brother but stay at it. I have had one every year since I moves into my house and have shot them both still working on this years but he is there but spends less time in my yard since my garden is mostly corn and potatoes this year.
Shot a bi sucker first year but have weighed 15 lbs.

Atta boy Joe, have at him. If you get 'em and cook it...throw a recipe on here. I've never heard of cooked ground hog.

I ruined two mechanical broadheads last year trying to get a squirrel. I got him on the third chance. I ate him for lunch   :)

He was the reason i switched to two-blade heads that wouldn't break. I know i can't resist shooting at them so why not get heads that will hold up to it.

Friend

What is great about ground hogs is that they seem to always provide another opportunity in the future if not the same day.

I have missed the same ones far more than my share. Took four shots on one specific hog named 'Big'n' over a two week period before I connected. The 1st three misses were between 4 and 7 yards. The connecting shot was from ~22 yards with a large snuffer right thru the heart-lung area. I remember the misses since the stalks were great and the final shot was on a busted stock.

Perserverance will bring home the ground bacon.

Best of luck!

Glad to finally find someone else who recognizes the value of groundhog on the dinner table.  Most folks look at me like I am crazy    :knothead:   when I tell them I enjoy eating groundhog.

Just wish we had some of them around my part of GA.

There are groundhogs here but i don't kill them. They leave my deer stuff alone and don't cause much trouble ,unlike their cousin Mr. Beaver, so i let them walk.

Lefty

Mmmm, potatoes, carrots, onions, groundhog, in the crockpot or roaster, slow cooked.  Then make a nice brown gravy! Yummy!

Roadkill

We have marmots.  I got one, cleaned it and my neighbor snatched him so quick.  May have to cook the next one.  They are the alfalfa field by the Truckee River

I missed one twice yesterday also.  They can be tough!

I've just been watching the ones behind my house. That is until they started in on my tomatoes. Then I had surgery and finally resorted to (I hate to say it) my rifle.

They're on to me.  I can't seem to find their trail cam, but they must know my pattern.  I got one but his buddy was standing over him when I followed up the blood trail.....had bow but no extra arrow.

He knows I mean business.....haven't been able to get within 50 yards.
