I shot a big gar and i want to skin a bow with it. Is there any special steps to do?
smooth seas never made a skillful sailer.

I"ve seen side quivers and arm guards and other accessories with the scales on. Have not seen one used on a bow yet.
Guarrentee the scales would have to come off. I have used grass carp skins and they look pretty good.

Dont forget to eat the back straps. Some of the best fish ive eaten.

Step one would be to post a pic of your gar on this thread!

After that, someone else id going to have to tell you the rest>

Congrats on your big fish!

I also would love to see pictures. as far as skinning a bow, I am of no use, maybe YORNOC would know, he does a lot of snake skinning projects.

This is a grass carp but the principles are the same.

Make a cool quiver, I made one and wrote a article about it for primitive archer magazine many moons ago. Cut up the belly with tin snips remove head and hide , scape it good , salt it down , dry it out, sew it up and make a strap, kinda cool

My brother and I bowfish and love gar, they are little pain to clean at first but once get it down, easy and the backstraps are awesome.  We use a hatechet got down the top, to open up the enamal scales, then filet away the skin from the meat on each side then the meat from the ribcage.  As far as using scales, they are enamal, might be able to same skin and tan it like carp, but not the scales.

They might know at 3Rivers, I talked with them about snake skins,

Forget the eggs, they are toxic to anything that eats them.
