Guys how worn out should you let the shelf be before you replace it? I am talking about the leather, Velcro or whatever you use to cover it? I am not that experienced of an archer to have a clue.
Thanks
Hopefully you will see me as a better person today than I was yesterday..

If you think it looks worn, replace it. It's cheap and easy.

I like the bear hair and let it get down to no hair in shaft spot.

This stuff ain't no rocket surgery science!

I just make mine out of scrap leather and use the 3m douple sided outdoor tape to attach. The leather wears well and is smooth and slick. I think I get better arrow flight using leather than the rug style rest.

How thick is the leather you use?

I generaly just use whatever I have handy. 1/16" is about right. The 3m tape is pretty thick so you don't want to use too heavy a leather.

I shoot a lot of arrows. My velcro shelf and side strike plate are still looking good after 3 years of shooting. Both my velcro shelf and side strike plate are the same thickness, 1/8".

I use silencer felt on all my bows.  You can get a good size sheet of it for around $5.  And you get a lot out of it.  Best thing is it sticks to itself.  Makes it real easy to build up the strike plate.

I use an un dyed leather belt and i shave a 1/16" thick piece off for the shelf and strike plate. Then I use good ole Barge cement and stick them on. They get a nice polished finish after a few hundred arrows and work great and last for a long time.

Some of my bows have real seal skin on the shelf. My Hill only likes the leather, others only like the seal skin.
