Hi,

I have a bear paw taper tool.
It doesn't cut quite as long a taper as some other tools.

I'm thinking real hard about using some 4 blade Zwickeys.

With the bleeders coming out the ferrule, does anybody know if the bear paw tapers are long enough to go past the hole in the ferrule?

Thanks

As long as the taper reaches the hole its fine, I use them and its not a problem. I had asked the same ? a while back and thats the answer I got.I have hit some pretty hard items shooting in the yard and never had a problem.

Hi Timothy,

I saw your post you're speaking of.
..didn't really have a "results after trying"..so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks for chiming in!

When you say "reaches the hole", do you mean having the tip of the shaft just getting to it.
..or having the tip of the taper actually go just past the hole.

...or somewhere in between..lol

Thanks a lot!

I've not used the Bear Paw, but I doubt it creates a long enough taper to fill the entire bleeder hole.  Even a standard "long" screw in adapter will not fill the bleeder hole completely, thus the reason for the extra long Sweetland adapters we carry.

If your taper doesn't fill the bleeder slot, filling the gap with extra hot melt works fine.

The tip on mine go just a little past the start of the hole.

I don't mean to malign a great broadhead, but if there is one weak spot on the Zwickey it's the ferrule on the 4 blade.

Unless the ferrule is filled with the shaft taper the taper can "jam" into the ferrule on hard impact shots and separate the ferrule in the short section before the bleeder.

A solution is to epoxy the taper in the head or otherwise "anchor" it solidly to the ferrule.

The longer the taper the better.

The old style Tru-Center taper tool that 3 Rivers sold was adjustable for length of taper.  I don't know if the newer model has this or not.

Thanks for the pointer Charlie.
I'm hoping (    ) for not too many hard impacts.

It'll probably help that I'll be using a 45# bow with a spruce shaft...no more added weights.

I think it's time to jig up a bench sander....   :readit:

I've thought about the old style.
I have one, I just haven't ever been able to get it adjusted just right.

Even with new blades the cut was always very rough...
