Bow help please

Here is what's going on. I have a recurve 45@28 with my Draw it's 54. I have been shooting 100 arrows twice a week with it with no problems.  I am putting my order for a long bow. I want to go elk hunting in Wa, do I need it to be more than 54 pounds to take an Elk?

No, 54# will be fine. Use a hfoc arrow with a good sharp head. That is my opinion, I hope it helps.

54# is fine for elk with a well tuned arrow and a nice very sharp broadhead. Put it in the boiler room and your good....Do a search on here, tons of info on this topic.

In fact you can readily do it with a bit less. If you are drawing a 45# bow to 54# your draw is 31"? If that is indeed the case 50#@31 is more than enough. Shoot what makes you most accurate and exceeds the legal requirement set by the stare regs.

Ill second what bjorn said...if your stroke is 31" youre more then good.

I'd still recommend a heavy single bevel 2-blade though, 'just in case'.

Should be good to go.  From the 2012 WA hunting regs, "It is unlawful for any person to hunt big game animals with a bow that does not produce a minimum of 40 pounds of pull measured at twenty-eight inches or less draw length."

I like heavy arrows when elk hunting--at least 600 grains.  My arrows this year will be around 660 grains.

Where in WA are you looking to go?  I go elk hunting in the Blue Mountains (SE WA) every year.  Good luck.

Same concept as a gun. I hear a lot of people say that 9mm isn't enough for a criminal. I doubt the criminal getting hit with the bullet knows what caliber it is.

Sharp broadhead, well placed shot= dead animal.

Bjorn summed it up just fine.  I actually have a new Tall Tines on order that is 50# @ 28", and it will be accompanying me on an elk hunt soon.

Where do you plan on hunting in Washington?

I have family that lives in West Port. They are going to take care of me. So as to where they are going to take me I really don't know. I just hope I don't hear any banjos playing!!!!!

Good rain gear is a must if you're elk hunting near Westport.
