Who makes a reasonably priced back back.  $185 for a small camo pack is crazy.  Why are these things so expensive?  An yone find a decent pack at a reasonable price?   Dick

I used a $40 hunter green Jansport back pack for years. It was fine for a day pack hunting whitetail. Not sure what size you are looking for. But there are alot out there on clearance this time of year. Some of the large sportinggoods stores have there packs reduced. You do pay alot more for the camo pattern. Army green works just as good. Check out some army surplus stores. Just my opinion

I've used backpacks for years but now really enjoy my wool haversack purchased thru G.F. Asbell! It's relatively cheap at $40-$50. Not a bad deal considering the alternative! Hope this helps. Thanks.

Take a trip to goodwill or other church sales and you will be surprized with what you find CHEEP. Kids backpacks and some ladies satchel style bags are great for day trips.Gucci and Prada bags just enhance you daily hunt.

If you're not opposed to a used one, I'd suggest looking around the hunting packs on the classifieds here. I recently picked up a very nice pack that I never could've afforded new for a great price.

If all you are doing is going on day hunts around home, go to a big box and get one of their packs.  

If you are backpacking into a wilderness area go with one of the big names.  You don't have to have one of the hi-tech, specialty, well-marketed hunting brands that are way overpriced.  I got a brand new North Face Terra 60 for $90 off craigslist.  It is very well made, a good hauler and all I need for a week in CO for elk.

 

I didn't get to haul an elk in it but I did hal one in an older version several years ago.

Kelty hunting backpacks are fairly large bags with reasonable price tags. For something small I second the GFA Haversack.

Keep an eye on the classifieds here.  Plenty of good deals.  And look at those wool haversacks from Asbell's.  They are all you need for all day hunts.

I guess it all depends on how much and what you're using it for. I agree that $185 for a small pack is spendy, but cheap packs are usually just not built to take the kind of abuse that a serious hunter is going to put on it.

The big weaknesses with most cheap packs are going to be the attention to detail on stitching/seams, and the quality of the zippers. You may spend more up front for a decent pack, but chances are it might actually save you money in the long run.

Agreed on Horn Hunter. I have one, and they strike a good balance between a quality product, specifically designed for the hunter, and a good price for what you get.
