I went out this afternoon to the WMA I hunt. With a cold front coming in and rain starting tonight and for the next 2 days or so I figured the deer might be moving. Since the wind was totaly wrong for any of my normal set ups I found a nice spot in a little saddle inside a new blowdown with the wind blowing into my face. After about an hour 2 does come in up wind of me from the lower end of the saddle. One doe came inside 10 feet of where I was sitting and busted me while I was attempting to draw on her. After that happened and my heart rate and the shakes went away, I realised I should have waited for her to pass by and then draw and shoot. Oh well still trying to learn how to hunt on the ground. Lesson learned today.

In addition to that close encounter I saw a hawk make an attempt to dive on a tree rat and missed. See even the hunting pros make mistakes. I also saw a black bear and 9 more deer too.

Pretty cool time in the woods! Can't wait to get back out there!

That will be the first but not the last time you do that exact same thing. Trust me.  :)

Keep at it. Happy you enjoyed it. Nothing like getting that heart pumping. I was sitting in my ground blind last evening bear hunting. No bears but around 5 a grouse came walking by at 15 yards. It was opening day fir them so I let one fly. They jump the string too. My shot grazed the top of his head & off he went to tell his friends. It was my first shot at one of those little buggers. Hoping for a rematch.

Larry, you are getting off to a great start this year. Keep it up, and wait for those shots no matter how close.

Nice opening day - great sit and exciting stuff for all of us to follow.

How's that bear herd coming out there in NJ - I hear that there are so many they have them on the unemployment roll.

Thanks for the nice words guys. No hunting for me today. Job interview to go to this morning. I hope to be getting off of unemployment today!

We do have quite a few bears here in NJ. Depends on where you go in our state. They sure are not behind every bush and tree but plenty for sure. If we had a Democrat Govenor(NJ Dems love our bears) bears might be allowed to collect unemployment.

Ditto. I have a stand but depending on how the wind treats me I may just have to post up in some natural cover:  :)  not even upset at the thought of that.

Sounds like your season is off to a good start Larry. I saw a Hawk dive on 2 Pigeons in a parking lot not long ago. Very cool! He missed, and they lost him in the power lines at the train station.

Good Luck to you this season!
