Do Therma Cells work on Seed Ticks and Chiggers? These critters have been a torment in my neck of the woods lately. I mentioned that to a guy a work and he said get a Therma Cell. I had never thought about them repelling Seed Ticks and Chiggers.

And while were on the subject, does anyone have a Seed Tick story they would like to share or did it leave you so tramatized just thinking about it might send you back into therapy?

No thermacell won't do anything for seed ticks or chiggers. Seed ticks are absolutely the spawn of satan himself, I probably have over 200 bites on me right now and they are miserable. BTW Seed ticks are little ticks not much bigger than the period at the end of this sentence. When they bite you they itch like the devil and love to work they're way into very tender areas. The best thing I have found to defeat them is permethrin. Chris

dont mention seed ticks......... they SUCK! got into them 2 times within a week! holy smokes it is not fun!

permethrin from what I am told is the ONLY way to avoid them- this stuff is in a can and supposedly works well.

We use thermacell for skeets and permethrin (treated clothes) for ticks and chiggers.

Are these the same as turkey mites?  Joe.

Pat B

Seed ticks are just hatched out and are very small but will completely cover you if not protected. I have remover 150 or more from one trip to the woods years ago. Now I use permethrin and never got another one.

Does the permethrin smell at all?

Ditto...wished the ThermaCell was equally effective on them all.  Works like majic for mosquitos...I get tore up by deer flies in my area.

No, you spray it on and let clothing dry out- leaves no smell and clothing can be washed with out loosing its effectiveness.  try a search on the stuff-

I'll expand on what Pat B. said.

Every insect goes through a few metamorphes. So does a tick. A seed tick is the freshly hatched tick. I think the proper term might be nymph. When two adult ticks get together and do their thing, they leave about 1000 eggs to be hatched later when the time is  right. When they hatch they all might be in a spot the size of a piece of paper. Well if you are the unfortunate soul to step in the spot and pause for a moment, you can have five hundred on you before you know it. It is ugly. I've had ~five hundred and it was unbelievable. Every place they attach is the equivalent of a mosquito bite that seems to itch three times as bad.

If you have very much hair on your legs and a tan you can't hardly see them. Rarely do you feel them moving. Just a few hours later you start having this insane itching.

My analyst said if I share this with you it might speed up my recovery. Pray for me.

Pope, I could take pictures that would make some people never go back into the woods. About once a year I get destroyed by these things that end up into weeping pox looking sores that itch like death. When I am going to go into the woods I am religious about wearing treated clothes but it always seems I get into them at least once no matter what I do.

The ones I have right now I got when me and my dad were doing some roving in his lower field. One of my judo tipped arrows skipped into the woods, I walked no more than 50 yds into the woods to recover it. I was wearing shorts and crocs, a few hours later the itching started, I am just now able to comfortably wear shoes and it's been over a week. DANG I HATE THESE THINGS. Chris

Thought the bugs were bad up here in B.C . My cousins down in Kans. talk about chiggers[?] shure glad we don't have those little buggers! Lol.Probbably too cold. 32*this morning!

Okay, Swamprooter, sounds like you've been here.  That time I had ~five hundred. My poor devoted wife sat on the floor while I stood over her, she had a  magnifying glass in one hand, tweezers in the other and holding a mini-mag flashlight in her mouth. Picking those beggars out of those kinda places you really don't want anybody going. You guys can get the rest of the picture on your own.

I owe her a debt I cannot ever repay.

careful, permethrin is a known toxin and not be used in contact with human skin.

Rob,
I just retired from the Army and that is where I learned about permethrin. We were required to treat our uniforms with it and were told not to come in contact with it wet but once it dried on our clothes it was safe. I always wondered what happened if you sweated or got caught out in the rain. I also know that treated clothes are good for several washings so it is some powerful stuff. Chris

At least the bugs you have up their you can see. Chiggers and seed ticks two of gods most hideous cretures....no-seeums. I am Californian and was introduced to these guy about 3 years ago in Arkansas, needless to say i could have passed on that introduction.

Do your clothes in permethrin like others have said and you should be good to go.

I hate the little bas$%^&s...  I have even used the "ole time" thing of a cloth soaked in kerosene wrung out and tied around your ankles.

These bugs are one of the reasons I dont usually hunt for the first few weeks of season here in Illinois.
