This one is for deer shot plaement...

How would you prefer to mess up a shot?

1. "a bit forward"

2. "a bit far back"

I have an opinion and an explanation. I will try to weigh in tomorrow if I don't get too tied up.

Thanks,

Brian

snakebite

If you are talking just a bit, I would rather be back for the liver than forward for a shoulder.

GreyGhost83

I have to agree with snakebite. I would rather be back a bit get the liver and possibly clip the back side of a lung just maybe.

TxAg

I agree with the above. Although if you're talking more than that...then I'd rather be too far forward. I've seen a lot deer live through a shoulder shot (penetration issues). Yet to see one live through a gut shot....and the chances of finding it can be slim.

Considering that I will pretty much only take a quartering away shot. I prefer a bit far back.

Personally I choose Back.  Even though its not preferred, a gut shot deer is still a dead deer.  A brisket shot deer is a wounded deer that usually lives.

I guess one can argue, a non-fatal shot is better than one that would take 3-8 hours to kill.
Relax,

You'll live longer!

id rather be a little forward in the shoulder. Ive never had problems with penetration on a whitetail.

If I miss the spot I'm aiming by a little, I too want to miss a bit "back".

I choose a little further back also.  Let him lay up.  9 times out of 10 you will find him if you didn't push him.

Where I'm going to aim this season..a little bit anyway but down will be fine and if it squats at the shot that will be fine too.

Bow Bum

I prefer to mess up towards option 1. "a bit far forward.

The more deer I shoot the less concerned I am of the shoulder. The majority of the shoulder seems to be relatively thin bone/cartiliage, and behind that relatively thin material is a whole lotta lung!

Forward misses towards the brisket usually result in survival, rearward misses; from what I gather from other hunters usually results in a dead, but unable to recover deer.

That's my thoughts   :)

Thanks,

Brian

Red Tailed Hawk

I prefer a bit forward myself, I have also had decent penetration there when my shot favored to the front.

Whitetail Chaser

Back is my choice.

Liver hits are deadly if the animal is not pushed.

Forward hits in the shoulder blade area....he will run for miles.

Just an opinion of course.

I would rather be to far back than to far forward as you can always leave a gut shot deer overnight and they will usually bleed out. A shot in the shoulder 90% of the time leads to a wounded animal.

What do most consider the "shoulder" of a deer?

The thick ridge that is maybe 1-2" wide, located towards the front of the "shoulder" or the entire outline of the shoulder which contains mostly the thinner cardboard-like bone/cartilage?

Bad stuff haopens, and it makes me sick either way.  No preference.
