Wood arrow spine?

I just read an article about heavy wood arrows and would like to build a set.  I am shooting a Hoyt GM2 that is 54@28.5 and tunes well with a 29.5" 2117 and a 145 grain point.  I want to use either ash or hickory.  What spine would I need to purchase?

My spine chart suggests around 85#, if the bow isn't encumbered by heavy string silencers or a fat string.

imo, woodies are in class by themselves, as compared to man-made arrow shafting.  if possible, it would be best to make up a spine test kit with several ranges of shaft stiffness, and see what works best for your bow and you.  

not a hardwood, but surewood doug fir offers a great array of spine ranges in an array of quantities to check out, dunno if those offering hardwoods would do the same.  then again, it's awful hard to find a better shaft than a surewood.  i beef up my surewoods with an internal nail footing that adds front end strength, more foc and more arrow weight (up to 100 grains).  

i shoot a 29.5" arrow out of a 54# hill longbow, and a 600 grain surewood flies great and hits darned hard.

Hey Rob,
Not trying to steal the thread but I would lime to hear more about the nail in the end of the shaft!  Sounds like a good idea- is it glued in after drilling? Giveme the details!

I think 70-75 left full length with 145 up front would be real close. You could fine tune with head weight and or internal footing, you can also change your center shot on your GM II by building out your strike plate or making it thinner. It won't take to much to get it right!

Surewoods for sure; get a few 75/80 and 80/85 and do some bareshafting to get the best tune.
