Febuary bucks

Just sitting here looking across a field and I see 5 bucks all with both horns laying in the edge of the field. Two of them are Pope and Youngs. All at once here comes a doe trotting up and the small buck gets up and starts chasing her. Then, to beat it all the other bucks get up and start fighting. Pretty aggressive I might say. Who would have thunk it.

Around here there are so many does that they keep cycling into March sometimes.  The bucks keep doing their thing untill then.  It's much less pronounced than in November/early Dec, but it's evident.  Cool thing is, our season stays open untill the end of Feb.

We yet to get into the rut here in south MS, lots of scrape activity but haven't seen buck chasing does, but i haven't been able to hunt this pass week.

I was off work yesterday and went out strolling around looking for sheds on the hunting lease.  I ended up seeing a small bachelor group of bucks running together.  I had a chance to put binos on them, there were 4, one of which was a 10pt.  I thought it was kinda odd to see bucks grouped up like that already.  Needless to say, i didnt find any sheds, they're all still attached.....JC

I've been out with my Lab this week as the weather warmed up a bit. We found 5 sheds,(he found 3 of them). There is only one buck around here still hanging on to his. I live between a couple of small time horse people and the deer go back and forth thru my place to feed on their hay and stuff. About a dozen Bucks hanging out.

I read an article on timing the rut.. It was done my measuring fetuses from road kills. What they determined was the run ran from Sept to March .. basically 30% of the breeding happens during a two week period in the fall.. (This is the time we all thing of as the rut) However breeding happens to about 2-5% of the does as early as Sept and as late as March with the balance happening along a bell curve to the 2 week period.

So what you saw was a bit on the rare side but still very believable and probably happens a lot more than we would think.

I'll be a hot date showing up for a bunch of boys would create quite a stir.  Kind of like a hot chick showing up at the bar 10 minutes before closing.

I too, saw a nice buck last week who still had his antlers. They've normally lost them way before this, here in my neck of the woods.
Very different seeing that many and acting that way this time of year.

Makes sense.I have seen tiny fawns in Sept...  Makes you think.
