I saw a Howatt longbow stung backwards, it is for sale at a very good price as the owner has no idea what it is.  What damage will this bow being strung backwards do?

Thats funny you should mention that...because a friend of mine once strung the very same bow backwards...he brought it to my attention and we still have quite a laugh...but you know he still has it and it shoots well...i sure couldnt speak for the bow your talking about ,but if it looks ok...then it will prob. be fine...SteveT

It'll probably be fine. You see this all the time on the auction site when a bow is being sold by people who have no clue.
I think I remember hearing one old timer say that's how they stored their recurves back in the day.
Another point, when I've seen this done the string is too long to really put a lot of tension on the bow anyway.

Guy

Edit: just re-read the original post and saw "longbow." In that case the bow is probably under some tension if it's strung backwards. I still think it will be ok, though.
Tie two birds together; though they have four wings, they can not fly.

We used to store them that way all the time back in the day. I doubt that it could actually be drawn that way, so no harm done. Buy it..

Never seen a Howatt longbow, you sure it wasn't a recurve?

Sometimes people just string them that way for storage.  I have actually saw people string and draw  recurves backwards but nevera longbow.

David Mitchell

If it's a longbow, I don't think you could string it backwards the way they did in old times with recurves.
The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

Blackhawk

Martin has been making longbows for many years under the Damon Howatt name.

Yes, lots of folks (past and present) have strung the recurve backwards, but NOT for shooting purposes.  I agree that stringing a longbow backwards is not common.

Anyone remember "The Texaco Man?"

Well, ya learn something new every day. I didn't think it could be done.

Thats some good stuff Blackhawk.

I'm surprised that Texaco Man didn't get a severe face whippin' from that string flying off......Ouch!
Now that would leave a nice welp!        :nono:      "[dntthnk]"

BTW- I have seen lots of bows strung backwards on *bay and some decent looking bows like Pearsons and even Grizzlies that were dirt cheap. I've often thought about buying one here or there........and then the thought just passed.

I wasn't paying attention one time and a guy who was looking at a Hill strung it backwards.  I liked to die, but it didn't seem to damage it.  He took it out and shot it and decided to go ahead and buy it.  Heard later he loved it.

An eye opening pic, no doubt.

Cool stuff.

Went prairie chicken huntin several years ago when we had a season here in Okla.Strung my Howard Hill up in the dark.Could not figure out why the shelf on my bow was not where it should be.Got in front of the headlights and she was strung up backwards.Got her strung up right and shot  at some prairie chickens.Didnt hurt it at all.Nobody would let me close to their bow that day,and took a lot of harassment.
