Hi everybody, I'm new to trad bowhunting, this will be my first season without a compound. I have an Indian Seneca, 55" tip to tip, 50# @ 28. It has a 52" string, I'm getting a new one, so tell me if that length sounds wrong. and can anyone tell me what weight tip I should use for whitetails, I used 100 gr with my compound.

Welcome to Tradgang.  You want to do a lot of reading here and a lot of searching.  Much of what you need to know or want to know has been discussed many, many times.

I'm not saying don't ask, but there is a lot of very good info on here.  Do some reading and ask all you want.

Strings are generally 3" - 4" shorter than the bow.

As for the broadheads, 100gr will surely kill a deer, but the issue is total arrow weight and up front weight.

Heavier arrows hit harder.  Since you are shooting a bow that is much slower than a compound the same arrow weight will not pack as much of a punch.

Also, more up front weight makes the arrow more stable.

You will need to do some work to find the right combination for your bow.  Read the posts on arrow weight, GPP, FOC, etc.  Then play around with things and ask questions.

What Mudd said about the new folks threads. Also, difficult to say what weight point for you set up with knowing what type of arrow you use...wood, aluminum or carbon, + length, etc. Enjoy your time here. Most of us are OK, but there are a few codgers and at least one old reprobate.

Definitely check out the thread for new members and those new to trad archery here on Powwow. Call 3 Rivers archery and they will help you choose the right string and arrows. They are a sponsor here and are SUPER HELPFUL for beginners. There is a lot to learn dso don't get discouraged. If you have ANY questions getting set up contact me and I can walk you through some of it.

Also, see if you can hook-up with any other New York guys. Learning from someone first hand makes the learning curve much shorter. It will still take awhile to learn all the neuances of traditional archery.

Trad archery is different in that you tune your arrow to the bow, not the bow to the arrow!

Howdy & welcome. Play with the search function and do some reading. It helped me get my start when I came to the light.

In general, you will likely need heavier arrows than with a compound. Most will reccomend 10-12 gains per lb of bow weight. If you go with carbon, lots of that weight will likely wind up on the tip. My arrows (complete) weigh in around 500gr - Gold Tip 5575 with 190gr heads and brass insert. Don't be afraid to try higher FOC than you are used to...it is not hype!

Welcome and one of the best pieces of advice I've gotten for learning to shoot traditionally is to just have fun.  Try not to be too hard on yourself and just go out and enjoy yourself.

I just read "instinctive shooting, A steb-by-step guide to better bowhinting" by G.Fred Asbell. I would suggest this book to a beginner.  It will make the trasistion alot smoother.  There are probablly other books as well, But this is the only one that I have experince with.  I dove into tradgang hard.  Did alot of searching.  I wish I had read Insictive shooting 1st.

There are some sponsors on here that can make a string for you.  Search them and give the a call or PM them your specifics and they will get you set up.  And my suggestion would be to buy two and set them up the same and you will have a spare that you can string up and never miss a beat.

For broadheads, as already said, heavier head hit hard.  I suggest getting a test kit field points, and let tunning help determine what weight head you use.
