I just finished a BBI that ended up 58 ntn, 80#@26, but I draw to 27 and some change. How do you guys build a properly spined 800+ grain arrow.

Mike that is a great looking bow. Whether it is  400gn and 45# or 800gn and 90# the same basics apply. First decide on the material and let's say it is wood. For your bow-if it is a classic selfbow with a shelf that is not near center cut you will need about 80# spine for a 29" shaft using a 'modern' non B50 string (you could use D97 or 8125).  Add 5# for every inch over 28  and another 5# for every 25 gn over 125 gn of point weight. For 800 gn you should use hickory-readily available in that spine and weight. Get a few different spines to check things out-if you draw 28" get 75-95# and see what works best. Let us know how you are doing.

you should get some good results with the gold tip big game 100+ and a heavy point...they are very tough, not too expensive and you could easily get an EFOC with them

Check with Don Stokes he may have some Magnolia shafts in that spine. He is a great guy and very knowledgeable.

I am guessing that with a self bow you would want to shoot wood shafts so might try lam birch or lam maple shafts......may also call some of shaft dealers to see if they have that heavy a spine, they may some on hand even though its not a usually stocked item....nice looking bow.

you can by Dons arrows from Dean Torge's website....well atleast get information there.   I believe there was some 100lb plus spined shafts.

WESTBROOK

KMC, I have 18 Lam Birch arrows that run 75-85# and 790-810g with a 160 pt. They are 30" BOP. They are too much arrow for any bow I shoot these days.

You will be able to get 800 gr with the lam birch and maybe with fir if you use a heavy point.  I saw your bow in the other post (very nice, btw) and it looked to be cut well out from center, maybe 1/4" or so.  With a 28" arrow and HEAVY point, you will probably spine right around bow weight; lower with a lighter point.

I second Don Stokes, got some shafts from him ,plus plenty of questions answered. Great guy --1Longbow

If you want a 28" arrow, then you'll need to get 95/100# if using a 160 grain point and Dacron, or 100/105# is using a modern, low-stretch string. If you want more weight, you can experiment with WoodyWeights and heavier spines. Surewood Shafts should have Douglas fir in the right spines for you. My arrows were 105/110# for an 83# @ 29" Silvertip, and they were 30" with 160 grain points - absolutely deadly. They weighed around 750 grains. Have fun!
