Soon!

I almost started a thread on this today, LOL! One of the best people to talk with about making a mock scrape is Rob Gillow of Outdoor Success.

I learned more in a few phone conversations than any magazine arcticle. His tactics nearly led to my biggest buck last fall. Just couldn't get a shot and he was only 15yds away!  :bigsmyl:
Just one more step please!

Care to share some of that info bud?

I've never used one, but have a spot prepared to do so this fall....

Should I start it now?  What kind of scent to start with?

During the rut, I like to take the rear leg glands off of road killed bucks and hang them near where I'm hunting.  It is amazing how great these work.  I have even taken a full bladder and dumped it in a plastic bag, but I never got to use it, it broke in the back of my truck.  But I wouldn't hesitate to use it agin if the opportunity presents itself.

Curt, here is a couple great videos Rob made.     ;)     I took an area that had marginal deer movement and by pre-rut, there were deer going through on a regular basis and using the scrape.
The reason I chose to stay with it was because the cover and water source was optimal plus a few nice rubs from the year before. I knew a big boy was in there but had to tweak the doe's patterns.
I love playing with their noses!! I used Scrape Plus and Whitetail Intruder, it's awesome stuff. All of his urine scents are bottled just prior to season so you'll get fresh stuff.

If you get a chance, you should give him a call!

Here is a video of a big doe that took over one of my scrapes. There was a smaller buck in the area but soon as Large Marge arrived he wandered off. I watched in amazement as she worked the scrape. I let the arrow slip shortly after.    :D

If you do a search for mock scrapes you will find 18 different threads.I have used them in the past with a IV bag with urine from previous kills(I use a syringe and extract the urine before gutting on does and bucks)and a little saline, set it for a slow drip and hang it over the licking branch.it works.

Here is one of the vid clips Arwin spoke of.  I did a follow up to this that showed a second scrape start up with in 10 yards and the mock scrape ended up over 62" wide and we shot 2 bucks off the set up.

Curt, Our season in Michigan begins Oct.1st. I have hunted over and had bucks in those mock scrapes on opening day. I started my early scapes with buck and non-estrous doe urines. Had two bucks at a scrape on the 1st but had my stand postioned on the wrong side of the tree! Good luck.

When would the best time to start making scrapes here in NE Kansas?

If you don't have pressure from other hunters I whould start in Sept. What a good mock scrape will do is creat a staging area for deer.  If you share your hunting land wiht others as I do then I start in Oct. for my areas If I start scrapes too soon other hunters will zone in on the area as well and cause a lot of pressure.
