I have been shooting traditional archery for about a year now and have made tons of improvement with lots of practice and the trad gang forums.  I shoot a bear grizzly, 50# at 28 inches and my draw is 26 inches.  The arrow I'm using is a 3 rivers Trad Only 500 cut to 28 inches with a 125 grain point.  If I use the Stu Miller Dynamic Spine Calculator it shows that this is to stiff by a long shot but when shooting it bare shaft the is nock high and straight on.  Please help? What am I doing wrong?

Have you compared the grouping of bareshafts and fethered shafts? Nock position lead me always wrong, comparing groups was most of the time spot on with stus calculator.

That said, i am by far no expert for arrows, so it is just my humble little experience.

I used to be a proponent of bare shafting but since using the "Calc" I find that it is right on 99.5% of the time. I actually tryed to prove it wrong by   :archer:  bareshafting and comparing. It was so close I thought why go thru all that work if their is a shortcut. When you get up in years you use shortcuts!

Punched your numbers into Stu's and it seems they are way stiff.  However, when bare shafting you really need to compare it to a fletched shaft.  Don't worry about the nock position.

First off, if you haven't cut all your shafts yet, I'd shoot a FL bareshaft with the point weight you want to shoot.  Are you using screw-in points or glue on with adapters?

Compare the fletched shaft with a bare shaft to see if the bare shaft groups with the fletched.  Once you get this to happen you can fine tune the shaft from there.

Once I get the bare shaft grouping and shooting where I am aiming, I will start taking a little cuts off the shaft to stiffen it up so that it will be very slightly nock left.  Adding flething will stiffen it some.

Thank you for the quick response!  I am going to get some new shafts that Stu's recommends and use the bare shaft compared to the fletched shaft method.  Ones again I really appreciate the help!
