Is cresting the last step or do you stain, crest and then clearcoat?

Depending on what type of paint you are using I'd go for stain>crest>coat.. Especially if you are using waterbased paints

I always stain, seal, crest, then cover the crest with an overcoat. I use oil based finish's for the seal-crest operation, water based for the overcoat. Stain could be either oil, water alcohol, etc., makes no differance, as long as its dry.
I was told years ago by a finish company, that you would have to wait seven days before overcoating the entire arrow. I only overcoat the cresting, not the whole arrow.

I do similar to Jim stain seal 2 coats then crest and then another seal coat. It's just my preference to do a final seal of the whole shaft.

Agree with the last two posters.  You have to seal the grain in the wood before you crest or your crest will bleed all over.
