On wood arrows, when you cut them, do they need to be square for a good taper? Or can you just cut em on the band saw and then taper? Thanks!

Grey Taylor

I don't think square per micrometer is necessary. Have the saw's table flat and have at it.

Not that critical since the end you cut will be the small end of the taper.

It will not effect the taper angle at all.

Most likely will not matter. The only caveat would be concern for the type of tapering tool and if it has a small stop...but not a great concern either. Enjoy, Rick.

I also use a hack saw and the pencil sharpener style taper tool, been doing it that way for a long long time and it works fine.

I cut mine with a cut off saw and snap off the ends then take the shaft to the side of the wheel to grind it flat.  That works well for me and no it isnt critical.

Barney

I've rolled mine under a sharp knife blade for years. Makes them fairly square.

cedar

I use a miter box/saw to cut and a woodchuck tool to taper.  I wouldn't think it would matter as long as you tried to keep your taper tool as straight as possible on the shaft.

crookedwoody

i use a razor knife to cut mine.just ring them good a snap off cut piece..chris

Thanks guys. Just broke some arrows and will need to cut and taper the ends again. Thank god I got them a bit long...  :saywhat:

doesn't hafta be perfectly square, let yer eyes be yer guide.  fwiw, i never saw, i cut by rolling a sharp knife over the shaft.
