My kid has a simple black Martin 30 lb. target bow, there is no rest, just the shelf. I have some arrows (Vapors) with plastic vanes that I would like him to use. Should I let him use them as is, or should I get feathers put on them? I guess I want to know if they'll really affect his accuracy as he learns. I don't want to discourage him. Thanks.

you cant really shot vanes off the shelf, so you have two options, buy a cheap simple arrow rest for $2 or refletch all the arrows with feathers, at this stage a $2 rest is the easiest option, you can always fletch them at a later stage if he wishes to shoot off the shelf.

yes, you can shoot vanes (non-feather) off a shelf (velcro bottom rug and side plate) - i've done so many times, particularly mylar spin wings and kurly vanes, but also pro fletch.  the spongier mylar vanes actually flew darned good.  the harder vanes required good form.  i don't recommend any non-feather fletches for a newbie.

at least for now, i'm with zetabow - get a stickon rest.

Someone said this on another forum. Could it be true?

I don't know about that brother.  I have shot vanes off my selfbow and they do hit and cause problems with flight.  I would go with the elevated rest just to take all variables out of the equation and it is much cheaper than re-fletching all those arrows.
When it positively, absolutely has to be destroyed overnight. Send in the Marines.

I don't buy that either but it would take only 5 minutes to prove it to yourself. You will see the answer very quickly.

when you watch those super slow motion vids of arrows leaving the bow, it makes you wonder why we have half the stuff we think is imporant.

Its a wonder we hit anything.

kids don't know whats supposed to work, they'll shoot and get good with anything.

but for down the road growth and success I'd just get an elevated rest like everyone else already said.
