Hey all,

I have all my materials to make myself a couple of tabs.  I am going to use Cordovan, a piece of stiff leather belt as a palm piece, some fleece like stiff material for the area next to the hand.  What I need to know is what kind of adhesive should I use until I get it sewn?

Would Super Glue be best, some kind of Elmers glue, epoxy, Barge Cement or what?  Do you have any suggestions or ideas?  Is there any downside to using Super Glue?

Thanks for the help.

Nala,

There is a product you can get from Tandy or possibly from Walmart in their "hobby/crafts" section.  The glue is called "Leather Weld" and it is a white glue that glues leather, is water proof and stays flexible.  That should work for you.  If using Super Glue they do make one for wood and leather.  That or good ole Barge cement would be great.

Barge Cement is tough to beat for that kind of work.

Barge Cement, for sure. Used it for years as a professional leatherworker.

Barge cement is the best for permanant work, 3m also makes a spray adhesive which works great, for temporarily holding pieces together.

i prefer not to back my tabs, just a single piece of 6-8oz chromed latigo leather.  i get a better feel of the string that way.

if i had needed to back it, i'd wanna stitch the backing on rather than glue ... i don't trust the contact cements in the heat.

I use a leather contact cement as well and then stitch them together. I have had just cement come apart to many times in other applications.

Contact cement is the way to go if you are gluing leather together. Barge Cement a brand name for contact cement. When I owned a custom leather shop(over 30 years ago) we used Barge exclusively but lately I haven't been able to find it. I've been using Weldwood contact cement with very good results. Basically the same stuff.

I use rubber cement, the kind that comes in the can with the brush that is used in school

I use the Barge cement then stitch together.
