Huntswithbows

My work be seding me to Austin for 10 weeks of training starting April 12.   I plan on bringing a longbow or two with me as well.  Would like to know the following:

- Trad shops in the area
- Archery ranges
- Public land for roving and shooting
- Turkey or pig oportunities

Thanks a bunch!

April 10th and 11th there is a great shoot in vanderpool tx. Not to far from you. Its put on by the TBoT.If you can come early I highly recommend it.

I will be watching this thread, was offered a job in Austin and was wondering the same things.  :D

You might want to check Granger wildlife area. Im not sure how it works but there is alot of acreage there and hogs as well. The hunting here is hard unless you want to pay. Hogs come cheap though!

Huntswithbows, Hope you enjoy your visit. I live about 45 miles NW of Austin and shop at Peacock Archery in Belton. Mr Peacock is a trad hunter and   would be a good shop to visit. Most of our hunting is on private land as SL eluded to. I would consider trading hog and coyote hunting for some inside info on where and how to hunt public land in Co. if you are interested.

I live in Austin and I'm getting started back into trad bowhunting.

There are no shops that focus on trad, but you can buy some stuff at Cabela's or some of the big box stores for reapirs and emergencies.  KC's Outdoors will make you arrows to your specs. Bob Sarrels (custom bows) is just south of the city limits and rubydog (custom arrows) is just east of San Antonio, not to far for an afternoon drive.

Archery Country in North Austin (pro-shop for compounds) has a 20 yard indoor range for $7 an hour.  A trad-only league shoots there every Tuesday at 6:30pm, very informal and friendly, just show up and shoot.  Fun group, nice people.

Austin Archery club has a 90 acre outdoor facility that has field archery and a 3-D walk-around course with 3-D tournaments once a month.  It's open from dawn to dusk.  Send me a PM if you want to check it out.

I hunt hogs on private land, but there are a few guys on this site who do well on public land.  Most ads I see are $100 to $150 per day, some have an additional kill fee for large boars. You may get lucky and get to hunt free if you meet the right people.  Having traded manual labor for hunting access, $100 is fair if all you do is show up and hunt a comfy, tripod stand with aan established feeder.  I have never hunted turkey, so I cannot help you there.

I live in Georgetown which is like a suburb of Austin. As stated above there ane no trad shops around here but there are several archery shops that will have tidbits. There are several BIG trad only shoots in the state in the time frame you will be here.

1. Hill Country Shootout(50 targets) - Vanderpool,Tx - 4/10-4/11

2. Glen Parker Memorial(40 targets) - Chester, Tx - 5/15-5/16

3. State Longbow Shoot(50 targets) - Ft Worth,Tx - 5/29-5/30

4. State Recurve Championship(50 targets) - Ft Worth,Tx - 6/26-6/27

I will be at all these shoots and also at local club shoots that are all on Sundays. PM me if you want more info or directions or anything else.

Hope to meet you and shoot a little.

Hey Bisch!

Seems like only a few hours ago since I saw you at Austin Archery. I think your score was double mine!

As Bisch says, there is not a real Trad Shop around here. We just have to band together. Too many training wheels.

Drop Bisch or me a line when you hit town and we'll shoot something.
