Looking for a spot to backpack in a mile or two and do some deer hunting this year in NY. Have hunted the Adirondacks before so looking for a spot in the southern part of the state with a good deer population.

Rattlesnake hill sounds like a pretty good spot from what I've read so far. Anyone have any suggestions of areas to try or areas they have been would good success? Don't want to steal anyones honey hole just looking for a new spot for some camping and recurve bowhunting this season.

Numerous spots in the Catskills offer a decent chance at deer and bear. Go to DEC's website and search for "maps".

it's very hard to get 2 miles from a road in the southern half of NY. What do you think this is, Montana?  :)

Rattlesnake is a good option. Also, check out Hi Tor in Yates and Ontario Co. If you get up on top of the "moutian" I doubt you'll see another soul particularity during bow. most of us flatlanders don't like to drag very far and last I checked ATVs were not allowed on state land.

Allegheny State Park in WNY would be an option since you are willing to go in deep. The Quaker area is pretty remote and doesn't get pressure until Gun season(no Sunday hunting though!).
McCarty Hill/Rock City just north would be another smaller option.PM for more info if interested, I cut my teeth up there.

Check out the State land around Roscoe / Downsville area. You can walk for miles there and never see another hunter.

I hunt Rattlesnake Hill every year for a long weekend in Nov. i asked the DEC about camping there and they said no camping on state game lands ,but you can camp on state forest.i have had some good success over the years, I only live about 25 miles from there in Fillmore so its easy to get to.
