What stain would be the best to use on ipe? I have heard Deft makes a good stain but I can't find it around town.

I think it would be hard to stain because it is very oily.  What color were you hoping to use?  All of it I have seen is really dark brown to begin with.

I am thinking clear. I would just like to keep it looking the way it is but protected.

not a stain but a finish.  Deft is a good one and can be bought at Home Depot in spray cans.  It's blue and white and is usually by the spar urathanes.

That makes more sense.  I have made arrows out of Ipe and they are beautiful under a clear finish.  I used Dalys Pro Fin and due to the oil content of the wood it took about a week for it set up so it wasn't tacky, on any other wood it sets in about an hour. Good Luck

I made a Bambbo backed Ipe bow and just used polyurethane in the normal way. Worked fine, and looks great - FWIW.
