Dragonfly stumping

Yesterday afternoon my almost 11year old son and I were in the field behind our house shooting some blunts and noticed dragonflys were out by the hundreds.  Most were flying fairly close to the ground and even some landing in the grass.  I don't know when I've had so much fun shooting, but we had a blast.  It's a challenge to connect on one of those buggers, they don't sit still very long.  I finally connected on one about 8 yards away out of the air and one about 12 yards that landed in the grass.  My son chose to wait until they landed pretty close and connected with one from 4 yards.  Who knew it could be so fun.  Has anyone ever done this.  If so let me know, I don't know what a trophy dragonfly looks like and I might want to get one mounted!!!!

Here where I live you have to put in for a tag for dragonflys. And you can only shoot 5 per day.

Only Kiddin'... Movin' targets like that are great for shooting practice. Lots of times I do the same thing with bumble bees. I'll teach them there bb's to land on my wildflowers!

I look forward to the dragonfly and damselfly hatch around here.  Not to shoot them, they eat skeeters by the bunches.  I can actually get out in the yard during the evening without getting eaten alive after the dragonflies show up.

I was working really hard toward producing a video called "Little Things" right before my Dad died(my film editor). One section was Hopper shootin. We get the big yellow-orange grasshoppers here each Summer. They are absolutely a blast to shoot. Rules keep shots in excess of 10 yards. It'll keep your shooting sharp till hunting season comes back around. It's also a sport engineered around your favorite beverage.

I tried it once during a Sept NH bowhunt. I was back at camp for the noon break and there was a dragonfly buzzing about. Never connected, but had a few quality shots. Spent more time looking for my arrow in the long grass.

Some decades back in Field & Stream, in Cory Ford's column "The Lower Forty", he wrote about hunting grasshoppers for off-season practice. I think they used pistols, though.
