I am thinking about making (having made) arrow inserts that are longer than the 100 grain inserts we all commonly use. I am doing this because to improve the damage resistance on the end of the shaft when impacting solid items. To better transfer stress I am designing the insert with a taper of the inner wall (not the outer that contacts the inner wall of the shaft) so the stress is more gradually transferred to the shaft HOPEFULLY improving damage resistance. I plan on gluing the inserts in this a glue called Plexus. It is an adhesive that sets in 45 minutes we use for boat building that remains somewhat flexible, is waterproof, and bonds extreamly well.

I would love any and all input, positive or negative....

Tom I'll try some out for you.  It will probably work better than the aluminum shaft over the carbon shaft for footing.  I can go anywhere from 100 to 150 grain total insert weight.

Call me or I stop by the shop and get some when you have them in stock.  Oh hows those new bows and boats coming along ya know the "newer" 17?  Really want to see that new 17.

I think you should make a few up and figure out what you need to do to market them.  It would suck to invent something better and not make the money you deserve for it.  So you think that will make them not splinter on the end?  You may be correct I aint no engineer.

EIGHTWGT

Mo - Im not worried about making money right now - if that happens great... right now I just want to experiment and make a 'better mousetrap' if you know what I mean... so I wanted to see what kind of input I may get....

I think you have a great idea and would be willing to try some heavier inserts. It would be easier with them to hit the 400 grains in the front.

Sounds cool. I'd try some. Got to get ready for an elk hunt & these would work great. Let me know what you want for a doz.
Thanks

I think you've got a good idea that needs actual experimentation. I really like the flexible glue concept, it would reduce the effect of the tremendous shear force of straight-on impact. And it'd be nice to get inserts whose 'lip' matches the shaft O.D.

The internal taper would work with a fairly long insert, spreading the glancing blow forces over more area. Good luck with your endeavours, keep us posted.

I think it would be a great idea!

I'd like to add:
That I think it would also be nice if you could either machine an "outsert" on the end about 3/8 long to protect the insert part from being driven into the shaft even more. Or, offer a machined outsert similar to the ones Bear Archery sold that were held on by the point or broadhead that protected the old glass shafts from the insert from being driven into it.

This stuff is why I am making 100grn inserts into 160grn inserts by drilling and tapping the rear end and putting in a 2" 8/32 brass screw, and then making an aluminum footing for the outside of the shaft...if you got an idea that would do it all in one piece I think it will fly (literally).
Would 3M 5200 Fastset or Sikaflex be something like Plexus?
I will be watching this for more...

Do a search for "Perfect Arrow",good info there.

Seriously thinking about buying a small Metal lathe to make some. I just sent money down to Florida for a Osceloa Turkey hunt in March so it will have to wait a little while.
