Is there any specific formula or concept on how many strands should be used for specific poundage for a bow?

Something I would like to try my hand at as well.  I think it depends on the string material, at least that is from my limited knowledge.

Eric Krewson

You need 6 times bow poundage to be safe. B-5 has about a 45# breaking strength, DF97 about 120#. I use 12 strands of both for bows in the 50-60 pound range, mainly because this gives me the arrow knock fit I like the best once the string is served.

Danny Roberts

I use 16 strand B-50 on everything. Like Eric said, it holds arrows better once served. Good luck !

Pat B

I use 14 strands of B-50 for bows up to 60# and 12 strands for bows 40# or less.

Check out John Scifres'  webpage.. He has a pictured tutorial that may save you some stress. He doesn't make two loops in his stings.
I've been using his method and it works fine.

You didn't specify whether you wanted to make endless loop or Flemish strings. Either one will work fine on your bow though. The endless loop strings require a fairly good sized jig while Flemish strings can be made with a simple wooden "string board" about 30" long. In fact you can make Flemish strings without any jig at all. There are a couple of "loaner" videos floating around that will help you get started. Look in the classifieds books and videos section for my post for "Doin' the Twist" .

I make the Flemish variety myself and use 14 strands of B-50 for a 2 bundle string and 15 for a 3 bundle, my bows range from 41 - 56 pounds.

I have been in the learning process on this myself.  Youtube has some pretty good videos on it there.  Type in bow strings or flemish strings for the best results.  Also, Three Rivers, sponsor here, distributes a good dvd as well.

I have been making B-50 strings for over 40 years.  I rarely make less than a 12 strand for comfort and nock fit, but a 16 strand is overkill for all but very stout bows.  14 Strand should work on most bows to 65#.  It is always good to know the manufacturers specifications.  I have not messed with the new stuff much and there is a lot to it.  Since none of my bows are newer than 20 years, I have not moved into the new fabrics.  Hard to keep that kind of inventory.  There are several thickness or serving thread available to accomdate your nock size.

Go to the web page below, it'll give you all the info that you need on how to make a flemish string and plans for making the flemish string jig.  Hope that this is some help to you.
