Indoor shooting protection

What can I use to put behind a target or two for shooting inside our recreation hall at church?  We have a men's night out with lots of guys who like to shoot, both trad and modern.  
We have plenty of room to shoot, but need something to protect the walls in case someone misses. (Probably a compound shooter.)

We can make it ourselves, or purchase if necessary.  Any ideas or pics or how tos?    Thanks Chuck

I've seen alot of clubs use a large piece of carpet. My experience is though that even with carpet compounds will still shoot through it. best solution is to tell everyone not to miss,lol

If you can find a remnant piece of carpet it works really good.  Hang if from the top and let the bottom stay loose.  Some of the arrows may stick in but I haven't seen one pass through yet.

I propped up an old mattress I was getting ready to throw out and it works really well.  (Don't ask how I know    )  Not very pretty, but the price was right!

Hymnals, pew cushions, or old piece of carpet.  You might want to go with the carpet.

There is a curtain material made to stop arrows.  I don't know if it will handle compounds.  Probably would if you doubled it up.  It needs to hang loose, so the curtain moves when hit by an arrow.  The movement absorbs the energy helping to keep the arrow from blowing through. I would think a carpet would be to stiff, and allow the arrow to pass all the way through.

We use old conveyor belting.. .  But for a temp back stop for the state indoors at the local HS we used plywood.

I've sent arrows through hanging carpet that was intended to pull them up at an archery club. That was from a 67# @ 28" longbow, with 780 grain arrows. One arrow got lost thirty yards behind in a swamp. It stopped the other shooters' arrows just fine.

A buddy of mine has an indoor range and he uses old converyor belt as well.  he actually blocked out a section for the conveyer belt and trimmed it out with wood so it looks pretty good and not just an eye sore.  In front of the that he has a huge bag target.  I'm planning on putting a short range in my basement and the idea of loose of carpet behind the target is probably what I will be going with.

I've heard of guys using vinyl covered hot tub covers.  Folds up for easy storage.
