I take one wrap around the tree then tie it off with a pair of slip knots -- or a chain of slip knots. With practice, the slip knots can be tied with one hand and with 2 or more in a chain fashion, they will hold. It is the most comfortable for me to have it tied off at about head height and suspended with at least two feet of strap.  When getting down all you have to do is pull the tag end to untie.  Mine came with a caribiner to clip it but I like to be able to adjust the length and angle of the strap to allow me to hang as comfortable as possible. Even with good positioning I have a hard time staying in it for over 3 hours at a time. It is light to carry and quiet but it sure does strangle your butt! A good set of knee pads will allow you to brace your knees against the tree and rest fairly comfortably. I place several pairs of tree steps in for my feet so I can change positions as needed.

Love mine!!!! I like to have the strap about a 1 1/2 feet higher than my head while standing. I'll wrap around the tree as many times as needed while maintaining that foot and a half above the head. I still have the caribiner on mine but would like something a bit easier to hook and un-hook. Screwing the bolt in and out is tough in really cold weather.
I second knee pads and a few tree steps to work your way around. I use strap steps.
Just one more step please!
