Yesterday my Daughter called and asked about recurves.  It seems her husband Josh was interested in shooting a recurve but had no idea where to start.  I didn't know he had any intrest in shooting a bow or I would have helped a whole lot sooner.

When Josh came over I found out he had never shot any kind of bow in his life. I let him try my 50 lb Impala but it was a bit much for him.  I went inside and got my 45 lb Bear Kodiak Magnum and let him try that.

I started him out at 10 yards and his arrows were all over the haybales that were stacked 3 high.  After discovering he was right handed but left eye dominant we came inside and I introduced him to Trad Gang to see if we could come up with a solution.  Josh stayed on the computer and found some answers.  Terry's T clock also caught his eye and when he went outside I let him go alone so I wouldn't bother him but I watched from the backdoor.

He was shooting at a small balloon from 10 yards. After about 15 minutes I heard the balloon pop.  I had the biggest grin on my face.

After he popped a 2nd balloon I went outside to watch and coach a little bit.

It was amazing how an hour spent on Trad Gang helped this first time shooter.  At the end of the day he was grouping most of his shots on a paper plate at 10 yards.

I sent the Kodiak home with him until he gets his own but the arrows we made for him would not be ready until today.  I bet his day is dragging at work just knowing those arrows are ready and the haybales are calling.

An old hand me down recurve sparked the fire, Trad Gang fanned the flames.  There is no stopping now.  Burn baby burn!

I had a grin on my face too, as I read about that first balloon!   :bigsmyl:

Thanks for sharing the story.

It was one of the best feelings I've ever had when I popped that first balloon.  Everything felt right and I nailed it.  It all started to come together a little better after that. Thanks to pac for helping me out, and a big hello to anyone out there in the trad-gang.

So.....
Did your work day drag and did you hear the hay bales calling?

Welcome to trad. Be warned it gets in your blood.

Tell Steph if she gives my new shooting buddy any grief she will have to answer to dad since she was the one that asked in the first place.

Hey Josh, Welcome to the addiction!!!
A year ago all I wanted was more speed and all the fancy gadgets for my compounds. I bought a new compound this september,Then I shot a recurve. I loved it. I found me a cheapy on e8ay and started shooting. I'm hooked. My compounds are just sitting collecting dust now. I have done my own arrows(carbons) for awhile. I'm doing my first woodies now and its a feeling you just cant explain.Everything is so much more personal with trad shooting...Roy

Yea I heard the bales calling   :)  .  I thought about it all day today also.  Wanted to be out in the woods or shooting targets, anything but work
:(  . Oh yea I'll be sure and tell Steph that, she's looking over my shoulder right now anyway.  Maybe I'll get to shoot tomorrow. I have to work on my day off, but hopefully I'll get off early enough. Well later, thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.

I think a good father in law should buy a new custom bow for the fella that is taking care of his daughter.  He might as well start collecting on some of his inheritance now.   :bigsmyl:   Chad

I am planning to tie "custom" puff balls on his loaner.  That's about the best I can do right now.

Enjoy shooting with your son in law.  It's great to have somebody that is excited about the sport to shoot with.  Chad
