Recurve limb silencer options...

Hi all,

What are my options for silencing the strings where they impact the limbs?

I would prefer something home-made if anyone has any good ideas in that department.

There are several options you can pursue.

The old standby was always rubber "brush buttons". I used them for years with good results and for a long time they were the only silencers that Fred Bear used.

Felt can be applied to the limb as can rubber or leather. I've used those as well and they do an "ok" job.

The best thing I've found is the "Bowhush" product conceptualized and produced by our own Terry Green. (see sponsor list)

You can use acrylic yarns for this purpose, but in my experience the Bowhush is a superiour product.

Rather than felt under the limbs, I use the nappy side of velcro. You can buy 5' of 2" industrial strength velcro at "Wally World" for $4. Cut you two pieces about 4" long and make them taper from 1" to 5/8" (width may very with limbs width). Then simply place them in the string grooves.

The velcro also works great for rug rest and side plates.

Thanks for you replies.  

I just had a read about the bowhush.  I have 3 Shetland fleeces to use up and they have lots of crimp in the wool so i'll have a go at making some with that and see how it works out.

I learned a trick with wool or acrylic yarn that works great. Get the yarn pinched in between the strands about six inches from the string loop and wind up until you reach the loop, go through the loop and then wind your way back down to the start, pull the yarn through the strands again where you started and then tie it off and trim. Works great. Search for a post called "how I silence my string" by Apex Predator for some great how to pictures.

I looked up the bow hush, I am doing the same thing with the yarn but that material looked a little nicer. I like to use the fluffy fancy yarn that you can purchase at any Wal-Mart.
