Shaping self nocks

For those of you that make self arrows. How do you shape your nocks? do you just sand them to shape, or ???

I am going to try to put some self nocks on my new set of arrow and was looking for some advice. I really like Nirk Nocks and would like to try and make self nocks similar to those.

I use small files to shape, and then sand paper to final shape.  For my first one, I kept a knock close by for reference.

I use some hacksaw blades taped together to get my throat roughed out.

Inside and outside of the nocks I use a variety of small files and then finish the outside profile with 220 grit sandpaper on a hand sanding block.

I make the initial cut with a hacksaw blade on the full diameter shaft. Then taper the shaft with the point taper end of a taper tool, and finish the cut with a tile blade in a hacksaw frame, and a chainsaw file. The taper is not to full depth, maybe 1/2" or so. then sand and finish.    

these are actually a little thin.

I make my initial cut with a band saw then shape the nock with a thin bladed knife and sand paper. When I get the opening right I remove all sharp edges and relieve the bottom edges for the string with a small rat tail file.
 Be sure to put a good wrap just below the nock or reinforce it with a spline. Pat

Thanks for the information!
I used a Nifty Nocker to cut the slot for the inserts and glued the inserts in. Filed the excess wood off the inserts, and sanded off the mess I made with the glue. I used the Nifty Nocker to rough cut the string grove. Unfortunately I was unable to get my set of small files back from a friend, so I will have to wait until next Sat to do some more work on the arrows.    :mad:
